Oshkosh Defense, EOS, and Orbital ATK Demonstrate Live Fire Capabilities

Precise mobile engagements up to 2 km with 30 mm lethality are now a reality

OSHKOSH, Wis. (Feb. 18, 2015) — Oshkosh Defense, LLC, an Oshkosh Corporation (NYSE: OSK) company, recently collaborated with EOS and Orbital ATK for a live fire demonstration at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama. The Oshkosh® MRAP All-Terrain Vehicle (M-ATV) Standard Base (SXB) was outfitted with an EOS R-400 fire control system integrated with Orbital ATK’s M230LF 30mm lightweight automatic chain gun to demonstrate the viability and lethal effectiveness of a medium caliber weapon system equipped M-ATV.

The combat-proven Oshkosh M-ATV is designed to accommodate a wide variety of weapon systems. Its exceptional off-road mobility and integrated protection provide capabilities for the most challenging operations. This live fire demonstration showcased improved accuracy in mobile engagements and integrated improved lethality on the M-ATV using a multi-role, multi-target automatic gun combined with a 3-axis stabilized Remote Weapon Station (RWS). Advanced performance data was captured from both the vehicle and the weapon system during the demonstration that included weapon and ammunition data, range and ambient environment, and vehicle attitude and dynamics.

“On the modern battlefield, it is critical to have optimal protected mobility and fully integrated weapon systems,” said U.S. Army Major General (Retired) John Urias, executive vice president of Oshkosh Corporation and president of Oshkosh Defense. “The Oshkosh M-ATV family of vehicles offers great design flexibility to meet a full range of mission requirements, protection levels, and weapon system integration capabilities.”

The advanced technology of the R400S-Mk2 combined with the lightweight 30mm Orbital ATK M230 LF cannon provides light and medium tactical vehicles with unprecedented access to firepower normally reserved for much heavier combat vehicles.  This collaborative approach provides mobile precise lethality and MRAP levels of protection to ensure crew safety.

The Mk2 remains a single weapon station specifically developed to provide 30 mm firepower in a high precision weapon system weighing less than 400 kg. The mount has 3-axis stabilization (roll, pitch and yaw axes) utilizing Fibre Optic Gyros (FOGs) and digital stabilization control. The stabilization is optimized for the platform as well as the weapon firing rate and recoil forces.

Orbital ATK’s 30mm M230LF Chain Gun® is an improved version of the 30mm cannon featured on the Apache helicopter and has been optimized for use on vehicle and naval platforms. It is a member of the Chain Gun® family of externally powered, combat reliable conventional automatic weapons. The M230LF boasts a DC drive motor with a firing rate of 200 rounds per minute. It is lightweight (72.6 kg), easy to maintain and extremely flexible automatic gun for use on air, naval or vehicle platforms. These key features and benefits are what make the M230LF ideal for use on ground vehicles and patrol boats.
